Dear Ask Away,
I need to start applying to colleges but I am scared because I know that I am not smart enough for college. My friends tell me I am and that I am just overreacting but I know myself more than they do so what am I supposed to do? Should I even go to college? I mean I think I should because if I want to do something I love I should be educated so I can do it but I don’t know if I am smart enough to go through college because I am already struggling this year. Also, my mental state of mind is not the very best either. I am stuck on what to do.
Scared About College
Dear Scared About College,
Don’t put yourself down. Everyone has something that they’re smart in. I’m terrified to start college as well. Once you find what you want to do it’ll be easy. This year may just be a rough year for you, I’m sure that everyone has a year they struggle with more than others.
Going to college is completely up to you. There are other options besides a four-year college immediately after high school. There’s the military, you could go into the workforce right away, or even a two-year college. There’s so much you could do, and if you have any questions about that you can talk to Mrs. Pinke or Mr. Witcraft in the guidance office.
I personally feel that if you want to do something you love as you said, you should definitely be educated on it. College is full of opportunities, which is amazing. Especially if it helps you get a good job doing something you want to do every day.
Now, regarding your state of mind. It’s always okay to go to someone and talk. Whether it’s the school counselor, a friend, or a professional outside of school. I myself used to go to therapy once a week and I feel that it really helped relieve stress and it helped with my low self-esteem. I prefer a therapist over talking to a friend because of confidentiality so everything you talk about remains private, with the exception of some things which the therapist would tell you about during your first session.
Do great things in your future, I believe in you! I hope this advice was helpful, thank you for your submission to the newspaper. Best wishes 🙂
